Ibadan: The Police on Wednesday arraigned a 40-year-old man, John Ogele, before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court Ibadan for allegedly beating his wife. Ogele, residing at No. 10 Alagba Community, Ido, is facing trial on a three-count charge related to wife battery, to which he pleaded not guilty.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Prosecutor, Insp. Omolade Adetule, informed the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on March 24, at approximately 5:10 a.m., at his residence in Ido. Adetule alleged that Ogele assaulted his wife, Mrs. Opeyemi Ogele, by using his fists and sticks to beat her. Additionally, Ogele is accused of causing bodily harm to his wife and damaging a Samsung Television set valued at N250,000, which belonged to her.
Adetule further noted that these actions are in violation of Section 4(1), 10(1), and 12(1) of the Oyo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2020. In response, Magistrate Olasinmibo Sanusi granted Ogele bail in the sum of N200,000, with three sureties required in like sum. Sanusi stipulated that one surety must be a parent of the defendant, while the other two should be his elder sisters, both of whom were present during the court proceedings.
The Magistrate highlighted the potential dangers of domestic violence, including its traumatic impact on children, and emphasized the importance of tolerance between couples to ensure household harmony. Sanusi advised Ogele, along with other couples, to consider the repercussions of domestic violence and to refrain from such actions. The case has been adjourned until May 19 for further mention.
