Abuja: A former army officer, Retired Brig.-Gen. Kalu Egwuagu, has pledged to tackle the growing spate of insecurity in Imo West Senatorial District if elected senator in the 2027 general elections, using his experience.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Egwuagu, a retired Nigerian army general from Izombe, an oil-bearing community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo, disclosed his intention in a meeting with the members of Izombe Central Union (ICU) in Abuja on Tuesday. He said that apart from tackling security concerns, education and agriculture would be other areas of priority attention, should he be elected into office.
Egwuagu emphasized that his efforts would focus on addressing insecurity and promoting agriculture to encourage massive food production and the establishment of ranches. He also expressed a commitment to reforming primary and secondary education to meet international standards.
He plans to contest on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and attributed the suffering
of people in most communities in the area to poor representation. Egwuagu cited his past experiences in brokering peace among conflicting groups in various regions of Nigeria as evidence of his capability to bring peace to Imo West.
Egwuagu assured that if given the opportunity, the security challenge in the senatorial district, Imo, and the entire South-East geo-political zone would be tackled with vigor. He emphasized the importance of extending peace beyond Izombe and Imo West to prevent criminals from wreaking havoc in neighboring areas.
The retired military officer decided to inform members of the Abuja branch of ICU, among the first phase of his consultations, as a member and to seek their support in whatever way that could make him succeed. The Chairman of ICU, Abuja, Mr. Valentine Onwuka, commended Egwuagu for his dedication to the community, while other members praised his past philanthropic efforts and expressed support for his candidacy.
