The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has directed the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs to accompany him to Sokoto, the headquarters of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, which oversees operations in Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states.
According to a statement released by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, Henshaw Ogubike, this directive is part of the Nigerian Government’s intensified efforts to eradicate banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the North West region. It underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security in the area.
Dr. Matawalle expressed deep concern over the persistent attacks by terrorists and bandits across Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi States, which continue to threaten the safety and well-being of residents.
During their time in the Northwest, the Defence Minister and Military leaders will directly oversee operations aimed at dismantling the criminal networks led by notori
ous bandit leader Bello Turji and his gang.
This move follows reports that bandits had circulated videos of a Nigerian military armored vehicle stuck in a waterlogged area in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The bandits were seen celebrating their ‘victory’ in the night after Nigerian troops were forced to withdraw to avoid an ambush.
Dr. Matawalle emphasised the urgent need to tackle this escalating security threat, which poses significant risks not only to the North West but to the entire nation.
He said; ‘We are ready to deploy all necessary assets to ensure that these criminal elements are flushed out and peace is restored to our communities,’ Dr. Matawalle stated. ‘The time is up for these bandits and terrorists. Increased and consistent operations will weaken all their bases.’
The Minister called on the Armed Forces to intensify their efforts, motivating them in person as they prepare to engage the bandits directly in the North West.
Dr. Matawalle assured the people of Soko
to, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi states, and the entire North West region that the government is committed to their safety and will leave no stone unturned until the bandits are eradicated.
‘I will be on the ground in the North West with the CDS and other military chiefs, leading our brave men and women in uniform,’ he said.
The Minister also urged residents of the affected states to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces, reiterating the Nigerian Government’s resolve to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians. The security and well-being of the people, he stressed, remain the government’s top priority.
