Freetown: The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE), in collaboration with the European Union, organized an Erasmus+ information session at IPAM, attracting students interested in exploring international academic and training opportunities.
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Sia Fasuluku, the Deputy Chief Technical and Higher Education Officer at MTHE and National Focal Point for Erasmus+, addressed the attendees on February 27, 2026. She encouraged Sierra Leonean scholars and institutions to utilize the programme’s components, such as International Credit Mobility, Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, Capacity Building in Higher Education, Capacity Building in Vocational Education and Training (CB-VET), Youth Capacity Building, and Virtual Exchange.
Ms. Fasuluku highlighted the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters as a key initiative. This programme offers fully funded scholarships that allow graduates to study in at least two European countries, covering tuition, travel, and providing monthly stipends. Moreover, Erasmus+ supports institutional development through curriculum reform, research enhancement, and quality assurance mechanisms.
Papa Njai, a Lecturer and Coordinator of Short Courses at Milton Margai Technical University, emphasized the impact of technical and entrepreneurial skills. He discussed a £700,000 initiative aimed at enhancing entrepreneurship training for faculty and students, aligning with national development goals.
Representatives from youth and civil society showcased Erasmus+-funded projects, focusing on cross-border peacebuilding and climate action collaborations between African and European partners. Speakers stressed the importance of forming strong partnerships, setting measurable impact objectives, and aligning with EU priorities like digital transformation, inclusion, and sustainability.
Dr. Wafa Msallem, the Regional Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa under the Erasmus+ programme, encouraged vocational institutions to access the CB-VET funding window, which aims to modernize technical education and promote international cooperation.
Current and former Erasmus+ beneficiaries shared their experiences. Alhaji Kebbe, pursuing an international agro-food Master’s degree in Europe, and Mohamed Samu, an Erasmus scholar, spoke about their academic growth, professional networking, and cultural experiences. They advised students to maintain strong academic records, gain relevant experience, and prepare competitive applications.
Denzu Duramany Lakkoh, President of IPAM’s Student Union Government, welcomed the delegation and urged fellow students to take advantage of the opportunities presented.
This session enhances the ongoing efforts by MTHE and the EU to increase awareness and encourage Sierra Leone’s participation in international education and mobility programmes.
