Abuja: Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has called for calm among residents of Angwan-Rukuba, a community in Jos North Local Government Area (LGA), following Sunday night’s attack. Mutfwang made the call when he visited the scene of the attack on Monday in Jos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, gunmen on Sunday night invaded the community in a commando-style attack, leaving dozens dead and some injured. The governor, who called on the residents not to take the law into their hands, acknowledged the pain from the tragic incident, and also assured them that the situation was under control and being monitored by security agents.
Mutfwang emphasized that the incident was a painful experience for everyone, highlighting that Angwan-Rukuba is a community that includes members from every ethnic group in Plateau. He mentioned having personal ties to the community, which deepens the impact of the event on him. He pleaded with the residents to refrain from taking retaliatory actions.
The governor assured the community that the victims would receive dignified individual burials and that the government would collaborate with the families to ensure this. Mutfwang also committed to covering the medical expenses of those injured and receiving treatment in hospitals. He emphasized the government’s dedication to seeking justice for the victims, noting that even the president is aware of the situation.
Mutfwang continued to appeal to the leaders and young people of the community to maintain peace and not resort to violence, urging them to control their anger. He expressed hope for resolution and comfort for all affected by the incident.
