Abuja: Mr Olakunle Olasanmi, the new Chairman of the National Association of Judiciary Correspondents (NAJUC), Abuja chapter, has tasked members to uphold accuracy and professionalism in reporting court proceedings, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Olasanmi emphasized the increasing necessity for accurate and factual court reporting in light of the prevalent misrepresentation of court pronouncements by politicians and other stakeholders. He stated that judicial reporting remains one of the most sensitive beats in journalism, highlighting the importance of factual and objective reporting of court proceedings.
Olasanmi pointed out that such accuracy in reporting will help curb the spread of fake news and deliberate distortion of court rulings and judgments. He assured NAJUC members that the new leadership would closely collaborate with judiciary stakeholders and security agencies to curb the spread of fake news and monitor the activities of unaccredited journalists covering court proceedings.
He also expressed the new executive’s commitment to leaving a notable legacy by the end of its tenure. As part of their immediate plans, they aim to settle all outstanding welfare obligations owed to members who have celebrated milestones such as marriages, childbirth, and bereavement within the next month.
Olasanmi announced the formation of a three-man Standing Committee to support the executive whenever necessary. The committee includes Joseph Kadiri, Benjamin Ejike, and Garry Ochigbo. The association also plans to revisit the recommendations of its Constitution Review Committee at its next Congress to consider appropriate amendments.
Olasanmi expressed gratitude to association members and supporters of his election, promising not to let them down. He also praised the immediate past executive for their commendable service to the association.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that other new executive members are Emmanuella Ekele, Vice Chairman; Alexander Enumah, General Secretary; and Godfrey Eshiemoghe, Assistant Secretary. Others include Wandoo Sombo, Treasurer; Austin Okezie, Financial Secretary; Oluwafemi Kuku, Welfare Officer; and Garry Ochigbo, Provost.
