Abuja: The Nigerian Navy has successfully rescued seven individuals following a boat collision in the Ogboinbiri waterways, located in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa. The incident involved a Tantita patrol boat and a wooden market boat, prompting a swift response from the naval forces.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Navy Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, disclosed in a statement that the rescue operation was initiated immediately after receiving a distress call. Personnel from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH were deployed to the scene, resulting in the successful rescue of the victims. The rescued individuals were quickly evacuated to a nearby medical facility for urgent attention, while efforts continue to locate any other missing persons.
Folorunsho emphasized that this operation highlights the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding lives within Nigeria’s maritime environment. This effort aligns with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, who prioritizes maritime security and human safety. He also noted previous search and rescue successes, such as the rescue of 16 passengers during a sea robbery incident in the Ibaka-Calabar Channel in March. Additionally, 20 crew members were rescued from a burning vessel near Calabar in December 2025, and 10 crew members from a distressed vessel in November 2025. In October 2025, 17 kidnapped victims were rescued in Calabar waterways.
The Navy assured the public of its readiness to maintain rapid response to maritime emergencies, adhering to global best practices.
