Rubochi: The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Government of Korea have successfully electrified Rubochi and Ikwa Communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with a 1-Megawatt (MW) solar mini-grid. The project, tagged the ‘Nigerian-Korean Energy Project,’ is expected to power over 4,000 households, delivering 900 kilowatts (kW) of electricity to Rubochi and 100 kW to Ikwa.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, since its inauguration five months ago, the 1MW clean energy system has been catalysing socioeconomic growth, improving security, and powering schools and hospitals in both communities. The Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, at the inauguration ceremony held in Rubochi, Kuje Area Council, emphasized that the project represented more than infrastructure delivery. The minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mahmuda Mammam, stated that the project is a tangible outcome of strategic partnership, sound policy, and a shared commitment to inclusive development.
Adelabu highlighted that access to reliable and sustainable electricity is a fundamental driver of socio-economic transformation. He reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Power’s commitment to expanding access to clean, affordable, and reliable electricity across Nigeria, particularly for rural and underserved communities. The project underscores the pivotal role of the Rural Electrification Agency as the federal government’s flagship institution for last-mile electrification, demonstrating that renewable energy can be deployed at a scalable level with measurable impacts on local economies.
The Korean Energy Project aligns with the renewable agenda of the current administration, reflecting the strength of international cooperation with the Republic of Korea. Adelabu urged community leaders and beneficiaries to take full ownership of the infrastructure to ensure its effective and sustainable use.
On his part, the Minister of FCT, Mr. Nyesom Wike, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Chidi Amadi, reiterated that the project reflects the healthy bilateral relations between Nigeria and Korea. He lauded the REA’s ability to seek modern, innovative, and environmentally-friendly energy solutions for rural residents, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda for developing satellite towns and rural communities.
Mr. Namgoong Tak, Charge d’Affairs Embassy of the Republic of Korea, noted that the project aligns with the Presidential Power Initiative, emphasizing solar energy as a key solution to Nigeria’s electricity challenges. The project includes a centralized energy management system at the REA headquarters, enhancing the reliability and sustainability of Nigeria’s mini-grid operations.
Earlier, the Managing Director of REA, Mr. Abba Aliyu, stated that the project marks more than the unveiling of infrastructure; it represents the activation of opportunity and productivity for thousands of Nigerians. The project integrates a robust solar generation plant, modern distribution network, advanced metering infrastructure, and household energy appliances, creating an enabling environment that addresses long-term sustainability.
His Royal Highness, Alhaji Muhammad Ibrahim, the Sa’Rubociyi of Rubochi, commended REA and the Korean Government for the project, which has brought relief to the community after many years of darkness.
