Abuja: The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Sola Enikanolaiye, has reiterated Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to the advancement, growth, and stability of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). During a handover ceremony for the outgoing Statutory Appointees of ECOWAS Institutions to the incoming management team in Abuja, the minister emphasized Nigeria’s support for initiatives that further the community’s shared regional integration agenda.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Enikanolaiye highlighted Nigeria’s anticipation for more robust ECOWAS institutions that are dedicated to processes and systems serving the community’s overall interests. He underscored the importance of focusing on regional economic integration while also prioritizing peace and security as foundational elements for regional integration. The minister warned against the imposition of economic integration, pointing out that it cannot thrive amidst political instability, terrorism, and other challenges such as climate change and irregular migration.
The minister also stressed the need for financial prudence within the community, citing the financial challenges faced by national institutions across ECOWAS. He urged for cost-effectiveness, prudent financial management, and a focus on value for money in the operations of the commission and other community agencies. He advocated for reducing operational costs, eliminating waste, and directing resources towards impactful programs and projects.
Enikanolaiye congratulated the new leadership team and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working collaboratively with all member states for a more integrated and people-centered ECOWAS. He noted the symbolic significance of the handover ceremony as a testament to the principle of continuity in pursuing regional integration and the ideals on which ECOWAS was founded. The minister emphasized the vision of a united and prosperous West Africa where barriers are progressively removed, benefiting the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.
The minister highlighted the implementation of ECOWAS Vision 2050 and the ECOWAS Compact for the Future of Regional Integration as strategic frameworks for sustainable development, peace, security, and prosperity. He urged the incoming management to prioritize programs that directly impact community citizens and focus on areas such as free movement, intra-regional trade, infrastructure, and innovation.
Enikanolaiye extended warm congratulations from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian government to the new management team. He also commended the outgoing appointees for their contributions to the community and the advancement of ECOWAS objectives.
