Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Nigerian artistes who emerged victorious at the 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), asserting that their achievement underscores Nigeria’s expanding influence in the global creative sector. Tinubu’s statement, released by Presidential Spokesperson Mr. Bayo Onanuga, commended the winners for their remarkable performances.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu specifically lauded artistes such as Rema, Burna Boy, and Shallipopi for their accomplishments on a continental platform, highlighting their contributions to Nigeria’s robust presence in the global music scene. The president emphasized that these victories are a testament to the strength, creativity, and resilience of Nigerian youth.
Nigerian artistes showcased impressive performances at the 9th AFRIMA, which took place from January 7 to January 11 in Lagos, the official host city designated by the African Union Commission in April 2025. Rema secured the titles of Artiste of the Year, Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, and Best African RnB and Soul. Burna Boy received Album of the Year, while Shallipopi garnered Song of the Year and Best African Collaboration alongside Burna Boy. Additional accolades were awarded to Phyno for Best African Hip-Hop and Yemi Alade for Best Soundtrack. Qing Madi won Most Promising Artiste, Chella received African Fans’ Favourite, and Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye were honored with the AFRIMA Legendary Award.
President Tinubu remarked that these achievements are the result of years of dedication and consistency by Nigerian artistes. He noted the significance of Nigerian music as a powerful voice for the nation across Africa and globally. Tinubu expressed his pride, stating, “I warmly congratulate our outstanding Nigerian artistes for their remarkable achievements at AFRIMA. Your success projects our culture and strengthens Nigeria’s creative identity globally.”
The President encouraged the artistes to continue fostering unity and pride, contributing to the growth of the creative economy. He also praised Lagos State for its successful hosting of the awards, commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for delivering a world-class event in a secure and dynamic setting. Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to youth empowerment and the development of the creative sector, acknowledging the potential of music and other creative industries to generate employment, enhance tourism, and stimulate economic growth.
AFRIMA, founded in 2014 by its International Committee in collaboration with the African Union Commission, drew participation from over 1,200 artistes, delegates, and industry stakeholders from at least 48 African countries during its 9th edition.
