Minna: The North-South Power Company Limited (NSPCL) Niger has announced that it has invested more than N1 billion in various community projects within the region. Dr. Samson Esumeh, the company’s Public Relations Officer, shared this information during an interview at the Company/Dam Host Community Stakeholders’ Committee Engagement Meeting held in Minna.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Esumeh detailed the company’s initiatives, which include a medical outreach programme, the construction of boreholes, and the provision of toilet facilities. He highlighted that 47 boreholes have been constructed, supplying clean water to 40 communities and benefiting over 15,000 households. The company’s Community Social Responsibility initiatives are reported to have positively impacted over one million people through efforts in health, education, sustainable agriculture, economic empowerment, and infrastructural development.
Esumeh elaborated on some of the specific projects undertaken by NSPCL, such as the free deworming of 10,000 school children, 600 minor surgeries, 240 major surgeries, and provision of free antenatal services to 55,560 women. Additionally, the company has constructed 11 sanitation facilities, an ultra-modern Public Health Center, and rehabilitated and furnished two community schools, while also donating educational materials to 30 primary schools.
Moreover, the organisation has awarded scholarships to 14 deserving students, provided agricultural inputs to 40 communities benefiting over 100,000 households, and trained 70 farmers on sustainable agricultural practices. The company has also rehabilitated 30 kilometres of roads, installed solar-powered street lamps, renovated a community centre, and constructed a 50-unit cluster of houses.
Through the Zumba Child Advancement Programme (Z-CHAP), NSPCL has facilitated the enrollment of 100 out-of-school children back into the formal education system. Esumeh emphasized that the company’s investment in host community projects demonstrates its commitment to fostering sustainable and peaceful coexistence among host communities.
Esumeh characterized the engagement meeting as a significant milestone in NSPCL’s 10-year journey of power generation and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) achievements. Prof. Danladi Kakimi, the committee chairman, expressed gratitude for NSPCL’s interventions, particularly in agriculture and support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). He encouraged the company to involve communities in planning and needs assessments before implementing projects. Additionally, Akilu Ishaku, chairman of Shiroro Local Government, praised NSPCL’s efforts and urged for more impactful interventions with value-added projects.
