Abuja: Vice-Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, stated that the alliance between him and Mr. Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, is aimed at respecting the principle of power rotation between the North and the South.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, emphasized that their decision to run together in the presidential election was influenced by the need for the South to retain the presidency for another four years, before power rotates back to the North. He made these remarks during the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Personality Interview Series held in Abuja.
Kwankwaso highlighted that this arrangement was part of an understanding between him and Obi, witnessed by their supporters, as a preparation for the 2027 general elections. He believes this approach will provide political balance and strengthen confidence among supporters in both regions.
He further explained that the agreement allows the South to produce a president for one term, in alignment with the political history of Nigeria where leaders from various regions collaborate to maintain national political balance. Kwankwaso stated that the presidency would return to the North after Obi’s term.
The former Minister of Defence also noted that the ticket aims to bridge religious and regional differences by pairing a southern Christian presidential candidate with a northern Muslim vice-presidential candidate. Kwankwaso stressed that the alliance is about building confidence across Nigeria and ensuring no section of the country feels marginalised.
Expressing trust in Obi, Kwankwaso conveyed confidence that the former Anambra governor would adhere to the agreement. He outlined that their administration would prioritize security, education, agriculture, and infrastructure while addressing other challenges faced by Nigerians. The alliance is committed to fairness, justice, equity, and preserving the unity of Nigeria.
