Accra, Mr. Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, a former Minister of State, emphasized the impact of societal values on the development of leadership qualities during his address at the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) Senate Conference in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, the behaviors and attitudes of leaders are inherently influenced by the social context in which they operate, reflecting the society they serve. He asserted that improving societal values is key to cultivating better leadership. The conference, themed ‘Guiding the Solidarity of Student Leaders: The Fortress to Academic Development,’ brought together representatives from various university campuses to discuss issues relevant to Ghanaian students. Mr. Oppong-Fosu underscored the importance of personal transformation and active societal engagement in fostering a positive societal context. He advocated for leaders to exhibit honesty, integrity, compassion, and a commitment to service as these qualities set a positive example and nurture a responsible society. He also highlighted the role of active citizenship in shaping a just and equitable society, which involves participation in civic activities, staying informed, and holding leaders accountable.
Stressing the significance of education in leadership development, he pointed out that education should not only impart knowledge but also focus on developing emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and moral character. These attributes, he noted, are crucial for leaders to effectively manage societal complexities and inspire others. Mr. Oppong-Fosu challenged aspiring leaders to reflect on their motivations, emphasizing that true leadership stems from a genuine desire to contribute positively to society rather than pursuing power, privilege, or possessions. He concluded that a leader’s legacy is determined by character, integrity, and impact rather than status or material gains. USAG, established in 2001, represents the interests of students across Ghanaian universities, advocating for academic excellence, leadership development, and a conducive learning environment.
