Akure: The Police Command in Ondo State has taken into custody a 55-year-old man, Ademola Joshua, for allegedly committing a serious crime involving incest and sexual abuse. The arrest follows accusations that Joshua impregnated a 15-year-old girl.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the spokesperson for the command, disclosed that the incident was reported on January 4 by a man named Adewale from Ilara-Mokin. Adewale alleged that the suspect engaged in unlawful sexual activities with his sister’s daughter. The truth came to light during investigations into the cause of the minor’s pregnancy.
Jimoh stated that the case was immediately handed over to the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) unit for a comprehensive investigation. He assured that the suspect, now in custody, would face legal proceedings once the investigation concludes. The command emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of women and children.
The spokesperson underscored the command’s dedication to ensuring that those guilty of sexual and gender-based violence are held accountable. He highlighted that the arrest is in line with the policing vision of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, focusing on gender-sensitive policing reforms.
Jimoh elaborated on the IGP’s vision, aiming to foster accountability and improve strategic responses to sexual and gender-based violence nationwide. He affirmed the state command’s commitment to realizing this vision through actions that build public trust and enhance community safety.
The command’s spokesperson also expressed gratitude to the public for promptly reporting such issues. He encouraged residents to remain watchful and continue providing credible information to the police for timely intervention, aiming for a safer society for future generations.
