Abuja: The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has announced its renewed commitment to enhancing the skills of journalists and media stakeholders to ensure accurate, balanced, and impactful reporting on Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. This dedication was emphasized by the Executive Secretary of PTDF, Prof. Shuaibu Aliyu, during the inauguration of a Capacity-Building Programme for Journalists and Media Stakeholders, held on Monday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Prof. Aliyu, represented by Mrs. Dupe Kay-Hambolu, Head of Press and External Relations at PTDF, stated that the initiative underscores the Fund’s commitment to promoting informed journalism and enhancing public understanding of the petroleum industry. He highlighted the media’s crucial role as a strategic partner in shaping public discourse, fostering transparency, and supporting national development.
Aliyu articulated the necessity of equipping journalists with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of the oil and gas sector. As Nigeria’s primary human capacity development agency for this industry, PTDF aims to extend capacity-building efforts to media personnel, fostering more accurate and insightful reporting. He reiterated the importance of conveying achievements within the sector with clarity and credibility, further strengthening the partnership between PTDF and the media.
Dr. Victor Dare, Group Managing Director of BetterWays Nigeria Ltd., highlighted the oil and gas sector as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, accounting for a significant portion of government revenue, export earnings, and foreign exchange. He emphasized that specialized knowledge is essential for journalists to effectively interpret and communicate the intricacies of the industry to the public.
The workshop aims to provide participants with specialized reporting skills, enhance their technical understanding of the oil and gas sector, and bolster public confidence in the industry, particularly in the activities of PTDF. The program promises continued engagement and mutual respect between PTDF and the media, with a focus on transparent and accountable reporting.
