Abuja: The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, has called on the Ministry of Environment to allocate more Private Sector Participation (PSP) trucks to the area to enhance waste disposal efficiency. Hunpe made this appeal during the monthly sanitation exercise held on Saturday, emphasizing the need for additional resources to manage waste effectively.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the chairman participated in the exercise alongside Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Environment. Hunpe pointed out the inadequacy of the two PSP trucks currently serving the area and explained that the community has been using tricycles to evacuate waste generated on market days, sanitation days, and other occasions.
Hunpe urged the Ministry of Environment to assist by assigning more PSP operators to Badagry and assured that the council would continue to enforce compliance with monthly environmental exercises. While monitoring various locations, he praised residents for their participation in maintaining a clean environment and warned against the indiscriminate dumping of waste.
Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu commended the community’s strong turnout for the sanitation exercise and thanked the chairman and his team for their ongoing support. He encouraged the community to continue engaging in proper waste disposal and assured them that the Lagos government would address their concerns regarding waste management.
Additionally, Mr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), stressed the importance of collective action in waste management. He urged residents to dispose of waste properly, maintain bins at home, and ensure timely payments to PSP operators. He also provided a contact number for residents to report any delays in waste collection to LAWMA.
