Abuja: The wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and Otunba Kehinde Almaroof-Oloyede, Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo, have officially launched the 2026 Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (MNCAH+N) Week. The event, which took place at the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Secretariat, aims to provide free healthcare services focusing on maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the council issued a statement on Wednesday confirming that the event commenced on Monday at the council’s Secretariat. Dr. Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the Lagos State Deputy Governor, emphasized the government’s dedication to improving healthcare access for women and children throughout the state. The week-long initiative includes services such as treatment for childhood malnutrition, deworming, routine immunization, nutritional support, antenatal care, and health education.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted MNCAH+N Week as a crucial platform for delivering efficient healthcare interventions to mothers, children, adolescents, and families in Lagos State. She noted that the program would not only increase access to free healthcare but also promote positive health-seeking behaviors. Key interventions include Vitamin A supplementation, family planning, immunization, nutrition counseling, growth monitoring, tuberculosis screening, and HIV counseling and testing.
She raised concerns over rising social issues, revealing that over 4,000 rape cases were reported in 2025 and that adolescent drug use is on the rise. Sanwo-Olu urged residents to report domestic and sexual violence via the state’s toll-free line, 08000333333, assuring that the government is committed to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring justice for perpetrators.
Additionally, she cautioned pregnant women against consulting unqualified birth attendants, pointing out that such practices lead to preventable complications and fatalities. She urged the Traditional Medicine Board, law enforcement, and community leaders to intensify efforts to bring these individuals to justice.
Reflecting on past achievements, the governor’s wife reported that over 4.19 million children received Vitamin A supplements and 4.36 million children were dewormed in previous rounds of the program. She added that around 17,500 pregnant women and nursing mothers accessed antenatal and postnatal care, and over 216,900 individuals benefited from family planning services. Almaroof-Oloyede described the initiative as a vital investment in the health and future of residents, asserting that sustainable development hinges on prioritizing the well-being of mothers and children.
He reiterated his administration’s pledge to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare, urging Oshodi-Isolo residents to take advantage of the free services offered during the week.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by traditional rulers, permanent secretaries, councillors, executive council members, development partners, management teams, and local residents.
