Abuja: The Senate on Wednesday, during a plenary session, paid tribute to the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea, who passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 62. Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District under the Labour Party, was remembered for his contributions and dedication to public service.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the valedictory session commenced with the late senator’s remains laid in state at the foyer of the senate chamber. Present at the session were Ezea’s wife, children, and relatives, permitted entry following the revocation of Senate Order 12.
Tributes poured in after a motion by Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele of Ekiti, who described the news of Ezea’s death as a profound shock. Bamidele lauded Ezea as a principled voice and a patriot deeply committed to public service, noting the void left by his passing.
Bamidele highlighted Ezea’s rare legislative disposition and unwavering commitment to national unity. He praised Ezea’s ability to connect across party lines and regions, emphasizing his humility and mutual respect for colleagues.
The late senator’s contributions extended beyond lawmaking, as Bamidele recognized his role as an industrialist and leader across various sectors. Ezea was commended for his dedication to improving the lives of his constituents and advancing national interests.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed the chamber’s grief, acknowledging the loss of a brother and friend. He commended Ezea’s tireless service to the republic and his enduring legacy of knowledge.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jubrin described Ezea as a principled individual, noting the loss of a cherished colleague. Senators took turns to honor Ezea during a three-hour session, with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe highlighting Ezea as a role model beloved by his constituents.
Senator Victor Umeh emphasized Ezea’s impact on human capital development, while Senator Osita Ngwu recognized his courage and positive disposition. Senator Kelvin Chukwu remembered Ezea as a man of integrity and conviction.
The senate concluded the session with Christian and Muslim prayers for Ezea’s soul, observing a minute of silence. A delegation will be sent to condole with Ezea’s family and attend his final burial. The session ended with a procession to pay respects to the late lawmaker’s remains.
