Abuja: Dr Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), emphasized that the well-being of senior citizens remains a top priority for the FCT Administration. She made this remark during the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Social Investment Programme for the Elderly Support Scheme in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mahmoud explained that the FCT Administration, through its Women Affairs Secretariat, is committed to social protection, healthcare access, emotional support, and social inclusion for the elderly. She commended Sen. Oluremi Tinubu for initiating the programme and stressed the importance of elders feeling valued, protected, and supported by society.
The minister added that the intervention reflects gratitude and encourages families, communities, and institutions to uphold the dignity of the elderly, ensuring no one is left behind. Describing the event’s theme, ‘Finding Joy in Old Age,’ Mahmoud highlighted that old age should be a season of dignity, fulfilment, and peace, rather than neglect or hardship.
She praised the Renewed Hope Initiative for its support of various societal groups, including the elderly, reaffirming that those who laboured in their youth deserve care, respect, and security in their later years. Mahmoud also commended the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat and its partners for consistently helping elderly and vulnerable groups live dignified lives.
Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary, FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, described the elderly as custodians of culture, wisdom, and collective memory, emphasizing that the programme’s purpose extends beyond material support. ‘It is also about validation and affirmation that our elders not only matter but are seen, celebrated, valued, and respected,’ she stated.
