Abuja: The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, emphasized that the Federal Government is focusing on inclusive governance to foster development in the South-East region. According to News Agency of Nigeria, Idris made these remarks at a breakfast meeting with news reporters in Umuahia, dismissing claims that the region is being neglected by the federal government.
He highlighted the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to advancing South-East development through extensive road construction, enhanced healthcare infrastructure, and ongoing dialogue with state governments. The minister noted that the appointment of Sen. Dave Umahi as Minister of Works and the continuation of road projects are indicative of the administration’s dedication to improving regional connectivity.
Idris underscored President Tinubu’s consistent engagement with regional governors to ensure federal support is directed where it is needed. He cited the establishment of a state-of-the-art cancer treatment center in Enugu as a testament to the administration’s healthcare reforms benefitting the South-East.
The minister also mentioned the successful completion of the South-East Regional Security Summit, which involved collaboration among the Minister of Defence, security agency leaders, state governments, and other stakeholders to devise strategies against crime in the region.
Idris addressed the collaborative efforts between state and federal governments on road reconstruction, emphasizing the importance of accessible infrastructure for all Nigerians. He also spoke about the government’s borrowing practices, stating that while borrowing is not inherently negative, it must be strategically invested in projects that enhance public welfare.
Furthermore, the minister revealed the establishment of a National Communications Team to streamline government messaging. Plans are also underway to engage with state information commissioners to bolster information management and national unity.
On the topic of security, Idris highlighted the increasing use of technology by security agencies, such as BVN, NIN, surveillance systems, and drones, to combat criminal activities. He stressed the importance of collaborative intelligence sharing among state governments to address the cross-border nature of criminal operations.
The minister concluded by urging journalists to contribute positively to national development and unity through responsible reporting, stating that freedom and responsibility should coexist for the country’s benefit.
