Abuja: President Bola Tinubu on Friday reaffirmed his belief in the necessity of a credible opposition, emphasizing that democracy thrives on healthy competition and constructive engagement among political actors. Tinubu articulated these views during the Eighth National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at Eagle Square, Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu stated, “Let me reiterate, we do not seek a one-party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition. As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition that can challenge, question, and help refine policies.” He underscored that such engagement is crucial for enhancing governance, strengthening statecraft, and fostering national development across democratic societies.
The president described the convention as a pivotal moment in the party’s history, providing an opportunity to renew its commitment to founding ideals and national objectives. “This convention is not merely a gathering;
it is a defining chapter in the story of our democracy and our party,” Tinubu remarked. He highlighted that the APC was established as a platform for national transformation, not solely as a vehicle for political ambition and electoral victories.
Tinubu stressed the importance of unity as the party’s greatest strength, cautioning against divisions driven by personal ambition and internal conflicts. “Our greatest strength has never been in our size, but in our unity. We must guard against ego overriding ideology,” he stated. He urged party members to remain disciplined and focused, emphasizing that internal cohesion is critical to sustaining political success and national relevance.
The president also paid tribute to the party’s founding members and late leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari. “Let us honor those who built this platform with courage and conviction, and ensure their vision is not diminished,” he said.
On governance, Tinubu highlighted his administration’s focus on delivering re
forms despite global economic challenges and domestic pressures. He noted progress in infrastructure development, tax reforms, social investment programs, and efforts to strengthen national security. “The sacrifices we are making today are laying the foundation for a more prosperous Nigeria tomorrow,” he asserted.
Tinubu mentioned improvements in key economic indicators, including declining inflation, rising investor confidence, and sustained economic activity growth. He pointed out that reforms in the oil and gas sector have attracted renewed foreign investment and strengthened the country’s fiscal outlook.
Acknowledging ongoing challenges, Tinubu addressed issues such as electricity supply constraints and legacy debts in the power sector. He announced the planned establishment of the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) to improve transmission capacity and boost electricity supply nationwide.
Tinubu also called for greater participation of young people and women in politics and governance at all levels.
“To the youth, you are not just the future but the hope of this nation. We must open more doors for your participation. To women, your role is essential. A party that empowers women is stronger and more resilient,” he stated.
He commended the Convention Planning Committee and party leaders for organizing what he described as a successful and impactful event. Tinubu urged newly elected party officials to lead with integrity, fairness, and commitment to the party’s ideals and democratic values. “The future of our party and Nigeria’s democracy depends on your leadership. Lead with courage, integrity, and vision,” he concluded.
