Post: Traditional Rulers’ Wives Play Key Role in Supporting Rural Women – NGO

Abuja:Traditional rulers’ wives have been recognized as a crucial support system for women in rural communities across the nation, according to the Helpline Social Support Initiative (HSSI), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, the president of HSSI, highlighted the importance of these traditional leaders’ wives at a symposium in Abuja, organized to commemorate the 2026 International Rural Women’s Day. The event was coordinated by the Association of Wives of FCT Traditional Rulers (WOFCTTRA) in partnership with the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat.

Represented by HSSI Programme Officer Mrs. Amina Omale, Ahmadu emphasized that the association has significantly impacted lives throughout the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The association was established with the aid of former FCT Minister of State, Hajiya Ramatu Aliyu, and continues to support initiatives empowering rural women.

Ahmadu urged all states to adopt similar initiatives to enhance grassroots development, peace, and gender equality. She noted that the association serves as a vital link, ensuring development starts from the grassroots level and acts as a voice of peace and safety net for women and girls facing challenges.

The NGO reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality, peacebuilding, and sustainable community development in rural areas. HSSI celebrated rural women in the FCT and commended the association and its partners for their efforts.

Hajiya Hauwa Adamu, Queen of Abaji Chiefdom and President of WOFCTTRA, praised Aliyu as the ‘foundational mother’ of the association and acknowledged Ahmadu as a mentor and guide. She also recognized Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi for providing the association’s first office and facilitating connections with international bodies.

Adamu further commended the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, the Grand Matron of the association, for her significant support through the Renewed Hope Initiative, which provides essential resources and scholarships to rural women.
