Abuja: Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has expressed concern over the recent party primaries’ conduct, emphasizing that the undermining of internal party democracy poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s democratic future. According to News Agency of Nigeria, Moro highlighted that the dominance of powerful political actors in the candidates’ selection processes has weakened democratic participation. This has denied many experienced lawmakers the chance to return to the National Assembly in 2027.
Moro, representing the Benue South Senatorial District, shared these insights during an interview in Abuja. He revealed that over 55 serving senators failed to secure tickets during their party primaries, a situation he believes could diminish institutional memory and legislative experience. “Democracy becomes the casualty when party processes toward the election of standard bearers are manipulated,” he stated. Moro stressed the need for deliberate actions to deepen internal democracy and strengthen democratic traditions to achieve the level of democratic development desired by Nigerians.
He also spoke on the 10th Senate’s upcoming 3rd anniversary on June 9, calling for comprehensive measures to bolster democratic institutions. While acknowledging notable legislative milestones, Moro emphasized that sustaining Nigeria’s democracy will require more robust institutions and adherence to democratic norms that enhance citizens’ welfare.
Moro insisted on continuous reforms in Nigeria’s political and governance systems to safeguard and deepen democracy. He noted that the legislature plays a vital role in promoting accountability, inclusiveness, and good governance. Reflecting on the Senate’s performance over the past three years, Moro highlighted its commitment to constitutional responsibilities, particularly in lawmaking, oversight, and representation. He pointed out that the Senate had processed over 1,000 bills at various legislative stages, underscoring the 10th Senate’s productivity.
Despite these achievements, Moro acknowledged the persistent challenges faced by Nigerians, such as poverty, unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, and unstable electricity supply. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the legislature and the executive to address these issues effectively. Moro also defended the opposition’s strategy in the 10th Senate, advocating for constructive engagement over confrontational politics. He cited efforts to maintain the Senate Committee on Public Accounts under opposition leadership, following the defection of its former chairman to the ruling party, as an example of safeguarding democratic principles.
