Maiduguri: The University of Maiduguri Alumni Association has inaugurated its first National and Global Executive Council, aimed at restructuring the association after five decades of the institution’s existence. The Global President Shettima Kukawa, at the event on Saturday, said it was a turning point aimed at transforming the association into a unified, institutional, and globally connected alumni body.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Kukawa stated that the new leadership would prioritize unity, structure, and impact to address longstanding challenges of inconsistency, disengagement, and weak participation among members. He outlined planned reforms, including a harmonized alumni database, stronger digital engagement, standardized chapter governance, and measurable performance frameworks.
“For the first time in the 50-year history of the University of Maiduguri, we are formally inaugurating a National and Global Executive Council of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association,” Kukawa declared. He emphasized the historical significance by highlighting the university’s legacy of producing leaders and fostering resilience and excellence over five decades. The new initiative aims to establish an alumni body that is truly national, global, and institutional.
Kukawa further mentioned that the association would focus on mobilizing resources for scholarships, mentorship programs, research support, infrastructure development, and industry-academia collaboration for the university. He called on alumni, particularly younger graduates and senior stakeholders, to actively contribute their time, expertise, and influence to reposition the association on a global scale.
The president praised the Board of Trustees, university management, and transition committees for their dedication to realizing the vision that led to the inauguration of the new executive council. He also committed to fostering transparent, inclusive, and accountable leadership to ensure measurable progress and lasting institutional impact.
In a goodwill message, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Mohammed Mele, represented by Prof. Shehu Liberty, a lecturer, expressed gratitude to the planning committee for hosting the program, noting it as a significant milestone for the university. He expressed optimism that the newly appointed executive council members would elevate the association to greater heights.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that among those inaugurated were Maimuna Abdullahi Wakawa as the Vice President, Dr. Jamilu Ja’afaru as Secretary, and Dr. Usman Usman as Financial Secretary.
