Abuja: The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC), Mr. Uche Ifeanyi, has highlighted that a significant number of cyber attacks are facilitated by victims acting out of ignorance. Ifeanyi shared this insight during the launch of an online cybercrime awareness campaign themed ‘Odogwu No Dey Hide Him Face,’ aimed at educating communities on online safety and cyber hygiene.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ifeanyi emphasized that studies indicate most cyber attacks are initiated or enabled by victims due to a lack of knowledge. He stressed the importance of protecting personal information, likening digital security to maintaining physical health. Simple practices, he noted, could significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to cybercrime.
Ifeanyi advised the public to avoid disclosing confidential information to unauthorized persons and recommended the use of strong, unique passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and employing security safeguards on digital devices. He further recommended keeping personal information private, avoiding suspicious links, and regularly updating software or system patches, highlighting the role of antivirus programs and firewalls in ensuring online safety.
He warned against the allure of ‘free gifts’ online, noting that if something seems too good to be true, it is likely fraudulent. He urged caution with urgent or suspicious messages and advised internet users to verify information before sharing it to prevent the spread of fake news. Cybercriminals, he noted, could exploit anyone, irrespective of age, occupation, or social class.
Mr. Vincent Olatunji, Director-General of the National Data Protection Commission, praised the NPF-NCCC for its initiative and the campaign’s theme. He underscored the importance of educating the public on legitimate wealth creation and safe internet use.
