Post: Volta Region: Six Women Among NPP’s Parliamentary Aspirants

Volta Region – In a significant representation of women in politics, six women are among the aspirants for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidacy in the Volta Region. The party is preparing to vet a total of 29 aspirants, including these six women, across 13 constituencies in the region.

According to Ghana News Agency, the women vying for parliamentary candidacy include Madam Fidelia Abla Awakoe in Ketu South, Lady Elizabeth Segbenu Agah in South Tongu, Ms Juliana Kpedekpo in Adaklu, Ms Millicent Nana Yaa Sokro in Ho Central, and Mrs Anoinette Oklu and Mrs Setorwu Abla Ofori-Atta competing for the Kpando seat. This diverse group of female aspirants represents a noteworthy step in increasing women’s participation in the region’s political landscape.

The National Executive Committee of the NPP has scheduled the vetting of aspirants from November 14 to 16, 2023, across the country. The vetting process in the Volta Region will be conducted in phases, with aspirants from Keta, Ketu South, Akatsi South, North Tongu, South Tongu, and Central Tongu constituencies being vetted on November 14. The following day, November 15, will see aspirants from Kpando, South Dayi, Agotime-Ziope, Adaklu, Ho West, and Ho Central undergoing the vetting process. The final day, November 16, is reserved for aspirants from Afadzato South.

Interestingly, aspirants from Akatsi North and Ketu North have been exempted from the vetting process, with the reasons for this exclusion not detailed in the release. The vetting committee for the Volta region comprises Alhaji Masawudu Osman (Chairman), Kwadwo Afari, and Kwame Peter.

The NPP has planned its Extraordinary Constituency Delegates Conference for December 2, 2023, to elect parliamentary candidates in constituencies without NPP representation. Additionally, the National Executive Committee has rescheduled the parliamentary primaries in constituencies with sitting NPP Members of Parliament to January 20, 2024, with nominations opening on December 20, 2023, and closing on December 22, 2023. The Hohoe Constituency, represented by Mr John-Peter Amewu, is the only NPP-held seat out of 18 in the region.
