Ilorin:Anaesthetists at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) have emphasized the need for ongoing investment in training and modern equipment to enhance the safety of anaesthesia practices. This call was made during a sensitisation rally held on Friday as part of the 2026 World Anaesthesia Day celebrations.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, this year’s theme, ‘Before, During and Beyond Surgery,’ underscores the comprehensive care anaesthetists provide, from pre-operative assessments to post-operative pain management and intensive care. Dr. Joshua Oni, Head of the Anaesthesia Department at UITH, highlighted the significance of World Anaesthesia Day, celebrated on October 16, which marks the advent of modern anaesthesia and its transformative impact on surgery.

Dr. Oni stressed the importance of recognizing all anaesthesia practitioners, including physician anaesthetists, nurse anaesthetists, anaesthetic technicians, and ICU nurses, who ensure patient safety and comfort throughout surgical procedures. He noted the need for greater public awareness of the specialty and called for increased advocacy to address the shortages of trained personnel and equipment.

Professor Benjamin Bolaji, from the University of Ilorin’s Department of Anaesthesia, explained the advancements in anaesthesia, highlighting the development of safer drugs and modern equipment. He noted that anaesthetists also manage pain services and care for critically ill patients in the ICU.

Prof. Bilyaminu Abayomi, acting Chief Medical Director of UITH, praised the hospital’s progress in anaesthesia practice, recalling its early days with a small team of specialists. He assured continued support for the anaesthesia department in terms of equipment, infrastructure, and training, emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to maintaining high standards in anaesthesia and surgical practices.
