Enugu:The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted claims that a Corps member’s death in Enugu was caused by substandard and falsified medicines.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, issued a statement in Abuja clarifying that the deceased Corps member, who had been at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Awgu, Enugu State, did not die from the alleged causes.
The statement revealed that preliminary investigations showed the Corps member was brought to the camp’s clinic on October 7 with symptoms of severe malaria and a known history of peptic ulcer disease. He received treatment and was stabilized with medications before being discharged the following morning.
The Corps member returned on October 10, complaining of thigh pain and was found to have low blood pressure. Despite treatment with intravenous fluids, his condition worsened, leading to a referral to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. The member went into a coma upon arrival, and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
The statement also noted that other patients at the camp received the same medications without adverse effects, suggesting that the medicines were not the cause of death. The medical team’s initial conclusion was that the death resulted from acute kidney injury due to severe dehydration and shock.
NAFDAC officials have visited the clinic to collect medication samples for further analysis. The agency expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of medicines.
The public is encouraged to contact NAFDAC for complaints or inquiries via their call center or email.
