Abuja: A Magistrates’ Court in Jos on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old unemployed man, John Bawa, to two years imprisonment for stealing and insulting his mother. The Magistrate, Mrs. Irene Pati, imposed the sentence after Bawa pleaded guilty to the charges.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the magistrate provided Bawa with an option to pay fines instead of serving the full prison term. Bawa was fined N30,000 for the theft and an additional N50,000 for insulting his mother.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Daniel Lengman, presented the case details, stating that the complainant, Lami, reported the incident to the Police Monitoring Unit on February 12. Inspector Lengman explained that Bawa had stolen N100,000 and several cooking pots, which he subsequently sold as scrap.
The police also reported that when Lami attempted to correct Bawa for his actions, he responded with insults, leading to the additional charge of insulting his mother.
