Abuja: An Abuja-based cleric and legal scholar, Rev. Fr. Anthony Azuwike, has expressed concern over rising suicide cases among young people in Nigeria, describing the trend as a serious and growing societal challenge. Azuwike, Head of the Department of Private and Property Law at Veritas University, Abuja, made the observation during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Azuwike highlighted that suicide, though a long-standing global issue, had intensified recently due to economic hardship and social pressures. He emphasized that worsening economic conditions have made suicidal behavior among youths a major concern, stressing the urgent need for preventive measures and stronger mental health support systems.
Azuwike further explained that students are particularly affected by this issue as they face academic pressure and uncertainty. He pointed out that students, being part of the general population, are exposed to the same pressures affecting young people everywhere. Parental and societal expectations were identified as significant contributors to the issue, with young people often feeling overwhelmed when unable to meet these expectations.
The cleric also addressed the financial pressure faced by students, noting that education is costly and the struggle to meet daily needs creates emotional strain. Additionally, relationship challenges and health conditions were cited as contributing factors to the rising rates of youth suicide in the country.
