Post: Dr. Esther Okereke Highlights Challenges Facing Nigerian Women in Politics

Abuja:Dr. Esther Okereke, the Presidential Candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), has pointed out that only two out of 18 presidential candidates in the 2027 election are women, underscoring the obstacles Nigerian women face in politics.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Okereke discussed these challenges during an interview series, identifying financial constraints, cultural biases, and political intimidation as major barriers. She noted that women often hesitate to participate in politics due to the high costs, societal norms discouraging their involvement, and fears of violence and intimidation.

Okereke expressed optimism about the changing political landscape, with more men supporting women’s participation. She is hopeful that the peace accord signed by all candidates will ensure a fair election for female contestants.

Addressing claims that women do not support female candidates, Okereke argued that such notions are tactics by men to control the political system. She emphasized the need for women to rise to the challenge and encourage support for capable female candidates.

Okereke also criticized the 35 percent affirmative action benchmark for women, advocating for equal representation in governance. She believes that excluding half of the population from decision-making hinders effective governance.

For marginalized groups such as widows, orphans, youth, and people with disabilities, Okereke promised to prioritize their welfare and continue amplifying their voices if elected. She highlighted her ongoing work with these groups, noting that her dedication has earned her recognition and support.
