Abuja: Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced that the commencement of operations at the three newly constructed Bus and Taxi Terminals by the FCT Administration (FCTA) is pending approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC). This statement was made following his inspection of ongoing road projects in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the construction of the three bus terminals located in Kugbo, Mabushi, and the Central Business District (CBD) commenced in 2024 at a cost of N51 billion. The Kugbo and Mabushi terminals were completed and inaugurated in June 2025 to mark President Tinubu’s second year in office, while the terminal in the CBD is nearing completion. Despite their inauguration, the terminals have not yet started operations.
Wike explained that the delay in operations stems from the need for FEC approval for the qualified operators, as the contract exceeds ministerial approval limits. The procurement process has already been successfully completed through the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP). Wike expressed confidence that the contracts would be presented for FEC approval in the next meeting, after which operations could commence.
During the inauguration of the completed terminals, Wike revealed plans to construct additional terminals in Gwagwalada, Bwari, and Kuje. He highlighted the significance of these terminals in modernizing transportation infrastructure in the FCT, addressing issues such as indiscriminate parking, and reducing road congestion.
Mr. Biodun Otunola, Managing Director and CEO of Planet Project Ltd, elaborated that the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals are designed to handle over 10,000 passengers and accommodate 120 buses and taxis daily. The terminal under construction in the CBD is specifically designed for intra-city operations. Otunola noted that each terminal would create employment for at least 100 individuals across various departments, likening the operation to running a mini airport.
Otunola also indicated that the FCT would require at least 12 bus and taxi terminals to adequately serve the territory, citing potential locations such as Gwagwalada, Kuje, Gwarinpa, Lugbe, and strategic city center areas like Area 1, Area 3 in Garki, and Wuse.
