Abuja: The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has committed to strengthening its collaboration with the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) to enhance transparency, accountability, and revenue mobilisation in Nigeria’s extractive sector. This announcement was made by RMAFC Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Shehu, during a courtesy visit by NEITI Executive Secretary, Mr. Musa Adar, in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Shehu emphasized that the partnership aims to improve revenue monitoring and transparency within Nigeria’s extractive industries. He described the longstanding relationship between RMAFC and NEITI as both strategic and mutually beneficial to the institutions and the nation. The chairman praised NEITI for its role in providing credible information on financial flows and operations in the extractive industries, which has bolstered accountability.
Dr. Shehu noted that NEITI’s efforts have enhanced public understanding of Nigeria’s extractive sector and promoted openness in managing natural resources. He acknowledged NEITI’s reputation for uncovering facts, reconciling information, and promoting transparency, expressing hope for continued support from NEITI’s international partners. This support would aid in information gathering, data verification, revenue transparency, and accountability.
The RMAFC chairman assured NEITI of the commission’s ongoing support and willingness to collaborate in areas such as data sharing, research, revenue monitoring, and policy engagement. He also congratulated Mr. Adar on his appointment as NEITI executive secretary, expressing confidence in his leadership.
In his response, Mr. Adar described the relationship between NEITI and RMAFC as a longstanding partnership built on transparency, accountability, and improved revenue mobilisation. He stressed the need to strengthen this partnership to achieve a greater impact in revenue monitoring and resource governance.
Mr. Adar highlighted RMAFC’s role in monitoring revenues accruing to the Federation Account and advising on measures to improve revenue collection and accountability. He emphasized the importance of reliable information on revenues from oil, gas, and mining activities for fiscal management and public accountability.
According to Mr. Adar, NEITI’s independent reconciliation of financial and physical flows provides valuable data on revenues, payments, production, exports, and company activities. These reports can support RMAFC’s work in revenue monitoring and policy analysis.
He mentioned Nigeria’s participation in the ongoing 2026 Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) implementation under the 2023 EITI Standard, viewing it as an opportunity to demonstrate progress in governance. The standard’s focus on data reliability and revenue transparency aligns with RMAFC’s mandate, offering opportunities for deeper cooperation.
Mr. Adar invited RMAFC to the Global EITI Conference scheduled for Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 in Brussels, Belgium, and called for stronger collaboration among NEITI, RMAFC, and other institutions in data sharing, revenue mobilisation, research, capacity building, and policy dialogue.
