Bwari: Some community leaders in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have emphasized grassroots development, commitment to basic services, and accountability as key priorities for the upcoming electoral dispensation. The leaders articulated these demands in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) ahead of the February 21 elections.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the community leaders perceive the elections as an opportunity for candidates to present innovative ideas and sustainable development plans throughout the district’s wards and communities. They stressed the importance of realistic campaign promises that candidates must fulfill, regardless of political affiliations or positions.
Mr. Japhet David, a community leader known as Dugbadna-Bwari, highlighted the necessity for candidates to exhibit a clear vision for local development and modern solutions to existing challenges. David underscored the need for practical plans addressing infrastructure, health, education, and security, particularly improvements at the ward level. He urged candidates to propose smart and efficient solutions, leveraging technology for service delivery, engagement, and transparency.
David also emphasized the importance of candidates being receptive to all community groups, including youths, women, elders, artisans, farmers, business owners, and the vulnerable, ensuring development benefits everyone. He stressed that campaign promises should include realistic and measurable intentions concerning transparency and accountability of public funds and resources.
Echoing these sentiments, Mr. John Awoyi, President of the Bwari Youths Forum, called for leaders who would ensure accountability by involving stakeholders, particularly youths, in budget planning. Awoyi highlighted the need for candidates to prioritize the welfare of public school teachers and healthcare workers, recognizing their critical role at the grassroots level.
Regarding the election conduct, Awoyi stated that his group has been cautioned against violence and disruption during the electoral process. He encouraged members to vote without prejudice and urged political party representatives and security agencies to ensure a seamless, fair election process. Awoyi emphasized the importance of conducting free and fair elections where votes are respected, and the outcome is peacefully accepted.
