Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board (FCT UBEB) has announced that the Model Smart School in Karshi, Abuja, is utilizing technology-driven teaching methods to enhance learning outcomes. The acting Executive Chairman of the board, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, made this statement during her familiarisation visit to the school.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs. Wenegieme highlighted that the school was initiated by the Universal Basic Education Commission with support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to integrate advanced technology into the educational environment. Her visit aimed to assess the condition of facilities and identify any operational challenges. The smart school, equipped with cutting-edge classrooms, interactive learning tools, and modern science laboratories, is reportedly making significant strides in improving learning outcomes.
The school Principal, Mr. Ado Murtala, guided the FCT UBEB team around various school facilities, including the Content Development Studio, which is a key component of the smart school initiative. Other facilities inspected were the school clinic, Information and Communication Technology laboratory, student hostels, and teachers’ quarters. Mr. Murtala noted that KOICA has been instrumental in developing the school’s infrastructure, aiding with the construction of the Content Development Studio, providing internet support, and training teachers.
He also pointed out some challenges faced by the school, such as the lack of basic amenities like water supply and electricity, as well as a shortage of teaching and non-teaching staff. Despite these challenges, the school achieved third place in a competition among the six KOICA-supported smart schools in 2025.
In response, Mrs. Wenegieme assured that these issues will be addressed by the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who is committed to enhancing education in the region. She urged the school community to actively participate in the institution’s development, emphasizing the need for collective effort. She also called on Non-Governmental Organizations and development partners to support government initiatives to ensure the smooth operation of the school.
