Anambra: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State has announced plans to enhance patrols at identified black spots, particularly following a series of accidents along the Agulu Lake axis, which have resulted in 11 fatalities within a month. The Sector Commander, Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, shared this development during a joint road audit at the accident-prone area in the Anaocha Local Government Area.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the decision for increased patrols comes in response to four consecutive crashes at this location. Mrs. Asekhauno emphasized the need to address the frequency of these incidents, attributing them largely to driver recklessness, despite existing road defects. She reiterated the Corps’ commitment to minimizing road accidents and engaging stakeholders in road safety initiatives.
During the audit, Mrs. Asekhauno expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the impacted community. She highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure improvements at other identified black spots and suggested installing barricades as a temporary measure.
In related developments, Ms. Nkechi Ogbuefi, representing Anaocha Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, voiced her concerns over the recurring accidents and pledged to collaborate with the state government for potential road redesigns. Additionally, Mr. Okonkwo Emeka-Konti, Director of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Authority, called for the immediate implementation of recommended safety measures.
Mr. Stanley Enike, representing the Commissioner for Works, assured that the agreed-upon measures would be swiftly enacted to enhance road safety in the area.
