Abuja: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has initiated an investigation following reports of illegal street racing and stunt driving activities allegedly conducted by youths around the National Mosque area in Abuja, particularly during weekends.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, revealed in an interview that the FRSC received numerous complaints from the public about these activities, which are deemed both illegal and unsafe. Ogungbemide acknowledged the existence of such reports and emphasized their illegality, noting that the FRSC had received mandates from Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed for the FRSC Sector Commander in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Felix Theman, to thoroughly investigate the claims and provide a timely report for potential action.
Reports of these activities primarily come from concerned residents who have observed unusual racing occurrences in the area. Ogungbemide clarified that Nigeria does not sanction Formula One-style racing or similar activities on public roads, making such acts unlawful if confirmed. He assured that no permissions have been granted to any organization or group for conducting car races or stunt driving within the territory’s roads.
He further assured that upon the conclusion of the investigation, the FRSC would take appropriate measures in accordance with traffic laws and safety regulations to protect other road users.
