Abuja: Highland Microfinance Bank has introduced the High Hygiene WASH Loan, a new financing product designed to enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene access for Nigerians in need. This initiative was launched in collaboration with Water.org and the National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the bank’s Managing Director, Benjamin Mapac, announced the launch as a significant milestone in the bank’s operations. He emphasized the strategic partnerships with Water.org, a global advocacy group focused on improving water access, and NAMB, the umbrella body for all microfinance banks in Nigeria. These collaborations aim to promote health, uphold human dignity, and expand water and hygiene access to more individuals and communities.
Mapac highlighted the challenges many households and businesses face in maintaining reliable hygiene standards. He described the WASH facility as a purpose-driven solution, developed based on research and community-level insights, designed to assist in acquiring or upgrading toilet structures and providing potable drinking water to those lacking access.
The loan features a low-interest rate of three percent monthly, with repayment terms ranging from six to twelve months, depending on loan size. Mapac underscored the importance of collaboration with Water.org in understanding the realities of water access and how the partnership with NAMB has strengthened community engagement and tailored solutions.
Eddy Orok, Executive Secretary of NAMB, noted that collaboration with Water.org supports the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) in Nigeria, aiming to enhance access to clean, safe, and affordable water and sanitation. He praised Highland Microfinance Bank for its role in launching this innovative product.
Gilbert Okpono, Senior Relationship Account Manager at Water.org, commended the bank’s initiative, emphasizing the transformative impact of access to clean water and safe sanitation provided by the High-Hygiene product. This collaboration offers dignity and hope to families across Nigeria, aligning with the broader goal of essential hygiene care.
