Lagos:The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is taking steps to ensure that Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) can participate fully in the 2027 general elections in Lagos State. This commitment was highlighted during a sensitisation programme in Lagos, attended by PWDs, Electoral Officers (EOs), and Disability Desk Officers.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Lagos State, Prof. Ayobami Salami, emphasized the importance of enabling independent voting for PWDs. He stressed that inclusion involves more than just physical access to polling stations; it requires the removal of barriers to registration, information access, and voting.
INEC plans to assess its procedures and facilities continually to ensure no voter is disadvantaged due to disability. The commission is also implementing targeted interventions like Braille ballot guides and sign language interpreters to improve electoral access for women, young people, and PWDs across Nigeria.
The National Register of Voters currently includes 232,658 registered voters with disabilities. INEC aims to tailor assistance to the specific needs of these voters, ensuring that electoral personnel are equipped to provide respectful and informed support.
The workshop also served as a platform to discuss operational gaps and demonstrate practical solutions, reinforcing the importance of a people-centered approach that integrates feedback from PWDs to enhance the electoral process.
