Katsina: The Katsina State Bureau of Statistics, in collaboration with UNICEF, has launched a comprehensive statewide census of Almajiri and Islamiyya schools. The initiative aims to reform traditional education through evidence-based planning and improved policy coordination throughout the state.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the exercise was inaugurated in Katsina and involves training 200 enumerators to gather extensive data on Almajiri and Islamiyya schools in all local government areas. Governor Dikko Radda emphasized the importance of the census as a means to promote social justice, inclusive development, and informed governance. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing structured, sustainable reforms that respect the state’s religious and cultural heritage.
Represented by adviser Dr. Tasi’u Dandagoro, the governor highlighted the Almajiri system’s role in nurturing moral discipline and religious knowledge, despite the pressures of modern society. He noted Katsina’s history as a center of Islamic scholarship, symbolized by the Gobarau Minaret, and its legacy of producing leaders and technocrats through the traditional Makarantar Allo education system.
Governor Radda acknowledged the challenges posed by rapid social changes and modernization, which have weakened traditional support structures. He stated that the census is a strategic step to obtain reliable data that will guide targeted sector reforms in statewide education planning.
Commissioner Malik Anas described the census as critical for inclusive development and child protection. He emphasized that reliable data would enhance planning and empower learners, teachers, and communities across Katsina State through targeted policy interventions.
Statistician-General Prof. Saifullahi Sani explained that the census aims to build a comprehensive database covering enrollment, teachers, infrastructure, and pupil livelihoods. This effort will strengthen Qur’anic education and ensure that no child is left behind in the state’s educational initiatives.
