Ilorin: Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has emphasized the importance of national security over press freedom during a book donation event at the University of Ilorin. While acknowledging the significance of press freedom in a democratic society, Mohammed underscored that national security must take precedence in the digital era, which is often troubled by fake news and misinformation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed articulated these views while donating copies of his book, ‘Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration,’ to the institution. The book, which was initially presented in December 2025, documents his tenure as the longest-serving minister of information and culture in Nigeria’s history. Mohammed highlighted the importance of regulating information without crossing into censorship, stressing that fake news, hate speech, and misinformation can endanger national stability.
The former minister noted that the book serves as a valuable resource for understanding governance, policy formulation, and communication processes. It provides a behind-the-scenes look at government decision-making and offers context to controversial national issues, aiming to stimulate intellectual debates. Mohammed recommended the book to university professors, administrators, and those interested in governance, particularly those who wish to understand the workings of government.
Mohammed shared his motivation for writing the book, pointing out the necessity for Africans to document their own narratives to avoid distortion by others. He described the book as a contribution to contemporary history, offering clarity on key issues.
In response, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, praised the donation. Represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Muktar Adeiza, Egbewole remarked that the book bridges the gap between academic theory and practical governance, enhancing students’ learning experiences.
University Librarian Prof. Kamaldeen Omopupa also commended Mohammed’s gesture, noting that the book would enhance research and intellectual engagement at the university. Omopupa highlighted that the publication covers various areas such as politics, economy, defense, and social issues, making it a valuable library resource.
The event attracted members of the university community, including students, staff, and other stakeholders.
