Post: Nigeria and UK Enhance Crisis Management and Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Abuja: The National Counter Terrorism Centre-Office of the National Security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA) of Nigeria has partnered with the United Kingdom to bolster the country’s crisis management and counter-terrorism capabilities. This collaboration was highlighted at the inauguration of the Silver and Gold Commanders Courses and the Intelligence Analysts Course in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the National Coordinator of the NCTC, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, represented by Brig.-Gen. Eromosele Lawani, emphasized the significance of these courses in improving national preparedness for major incidents and civil emergencies. He noted that the courses are pivotal in developing future leaders in emergency response, with each edition delivering meaningful results and equipping participants with essential skills.

In his remarks, Laka praised the British High Commission for its unwavering support, which has been crucial in capacity building and providing expert trainers. This support aligns with the Centre’s vision of becoming a regional counter-terrorism hub. He highlighted that the UK’s steadfast assistance has been instrumental in advancing NCTC’s mandate to become a Regional Counter Terrorism Centre.

The Gold Commanders Course focuses on strategic-level leadership for managing major incidents, while the Silver Commanders Course targets operational-level coordination, reinforced by the Intelligence Analysts Course. Together, these courses offer a comprehensive framework for developing future crisis-management leaders.

Ian Tyler, the UK Counter-Terrorism Regional Coordinator, underscored the importance of the programme in providing a unique multi-agency platform for developing Nigeria’s next generation of security leaders. He stressed the necessity of continuing on the training pathway to cultivate Nigeria’s leaders of tomorrow, who will acquire skills to process intelligence, assess complex situations, and make informed strategic decisions.

Tyler further explained that the training runs alongside the National Crisis Exercise – Rapid Response, which showcases Nigeria’s readiness and capability to respond effectively to terrorist incidents. He reiterated that the Gold and Silver Command framework is designed to fortify leadership, coordination, and decision-making required for managing major incidents and civil emergencies.

He concluded by reaffirming the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and enhancing regional security cooperation, stating, “Through this partnership, the UK and Nigeria stand united in building a safer and more secured future.”
