Port harcourt: The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, has released the preliminary report on its ongoing investigation into the serious incident involving a Boeing 737-524 aircraft, with national registration marks 5N-BQQ, operated by Air Peace Limited.
According to Voice of Nigeria, the report was detailed in a press statement by Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB. The incident took place on 13 July 2025 at Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The aircraft was on a scheduled domestic flight from Lagos State to Port Harcourt with 103 persons on board when it landed long on Runway 21 following an unstable final approach, touching down 2,264 meters from the runway threshold and stopping 209 meters into the clearway. Fortunately, all passengers and crew members disembarked safely with no injuries reported.
Initial toxicological tests indicated positive results for certain substances in the flight crew, including
alcohol, and a cabin crew member tested positive for THC, the psychoactive component in cannabis. These findings are being reviewed under the investigation’s human performance and safety management components.
The NSIB has recommended that Air Peace Limited enhance its crew resource management (CRM) training, specifically in managing unstable approaches and go-around decisions, and improve internal procedures for monitoring crew fitness-for-duty before flight dispatch. The full preliminary report is available on the NSIB website, detailing early findings pending further analysis. The final report will offer detailed conclusions and additional safety recommendations.
Air Peace responded to the NSIB’s preliminary report with a press statement, highlighting that they had not received official communication from the NSIB over a month after the incident. The captain of the affected flight was grounded due to CRM principle violations and ignoring standard go-around procedures. However, the First Officer, who cal
led for a go-around, has been reinstated with approval from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, indicating that he was not involved in drug or alcohol use.
