Abuja: Mr Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), expressed gratitude towards President Bola Tinubu for his second intervention in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. Wike’s remarks came in response to the recent meeting convened by the President, aimed at resolving the persistent conflict between members of the Rivers Assembly and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, President Tinubu held discussions on Sunday night with Wike, Governor Fubara, and other significant political figures from Rivers. The meeting sought to address the extended political discord in the state. Speaking to journalists after inspecting ongoing projects in Abuja, Wike expressed confidence that this would be the final intervention required by Tinubu to settle the crisis in Rivers.
The Rivers Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, on January 8. The assembly members cited alleged gross misconduct and unconstitutional expenditure as reasons for the impeachment process.
Wike emphasized the President’s supportive role, stating, “Mr President has been very kind to the people of Rivers. If there is a problem between the legislators and the governor, as a father, he really has to intervene.” He recalled this being the second intervention by the President and expressed hope that it would be the last. Wike also mentioned directing the lawmakers to comply with the President’s guidance, expressing confidence in their cooperation.
