According to Sierra Leone News Agency, the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO) now supports Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health in strengthening systems for the future introduction of the Lassa Fever vaccine. This collaboration marks a turning point against the haemorrhagic disease devastating endemic districts.
Over twenty-four months, the Ministry achieved extraordinary progress transforming diagnosis and treatment capabilities. Enhanced laboratory networks, specialized health worker training, and strengthened case management protocols particularly in Kenema District drove survival rates to an impressive 88 percent among confirmed cases.
These gains reflect sustained investments in epidemic preparedness and coordinated government-partner responses saving
lives across affected communities.
Despite significant improvements, health authorities point persistent challenges, that the virus continues circulating through endemic regions. Sustained vigilance, community awareness campaigns, and cross-border collaboration remain essential protecting vulnerable populations.
A three-day vaccine-readiness workshop now convenes key stakeholders assessing regulatory frameworks, cold chain capacity, community engagement strategies, and workforce preparedness.
