Abuja: Stakeholders in the judicial sector have urged members of the National Assembly to ensure the proposed constitution review aligns with democratic best practices. They gave the charge at a one-day Webinar Series No. 14 of the Rule of Law Foundation, organized to address the problems of modern-day Nigeria through constitutional amendment. The event was to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the call to the Nigerian bar and 30 years of conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria on JB Daudu.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Daudu, in his paper entitled “Input as it Relates to the Ongoing Process of Constitutional Amendment,” emphasized that the review must consider historical lessons and the urgent need for public trust in Nigeria’s legal system. He noted that the issues of bad governance and corruption in Nigeria stem not from the constitution itself but from the attitudes of leaders towards governance principles. Daudu argued that any constitution could be applied equitably unless personal interests interfere, and a misapplied constitution would fail to deliver justice and peace.
The governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, stressed the importance of constitutional amendment, as certain provisions of the constitution no longer align with international best practices. Represented by Muiz Abdullahi, SAN, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state, Ododo highlighted the necessity of amending the 1999 constitution to promote the rule of law, strengthen the judiciary’s independence, protect human rights, and ensure access to justice.
Ododo pointed out the need to strengthen federalism by devolving more powers to state governments, allowing for rapid development across Nigeria. He urged that both federal and state governments should have the authority to legislate on issues like mining, addressing constitutional provisions that may lead to confusion or multiple interpretations. Ododo emphasized that aligning the constitution with changing times is crucial to reflect the aspirations and needs of Nigerian citizens, promoting good governance and national development.
