Abuja:A Non-Governmental Organisation, the Tabitha Cumi Foundation (TCF), has educated over 400 girls across Nigeria on their rights and financial independence, coinciding with the United Nations Day of the Girl Child.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the foundation’s Executive Director, Mrs. Tayo Erinle, represented by Programme Manager Mrs. Nendirmwe Ohah, shared this during an event in Abuja. The event was part of the 2026 theme, ‘End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights.’
The initiative took place across communities in Bauchi, Benue, Lagos, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), gathering both school and out-of-school girls. Erinle highlighted the importance of such gatherings, emphasizing the exchange of perspectives and mutual inspiration among participants. Specific communities in Abuja, including Kogo, Pape, Durumi, Jabi, Mapa, and Idu-koro, were involved.
Mrs. Erinle noted that raising awareness about girl child rights and stakeholder roles is crucial. The foundation is also engaging parents to prevent gender-based violence, forming clubs to educate families on supporting and protecting girls. Erinle called on the government to enforce policies against child marriage.
Mrs. Sonaya Adeniyi-Fashola, a girl rights activist and keynote speaker, emphasized the importance of financial independence for girls and advocated for educational scholarships and skills training to achieve it. She stressed that early marriage disrupts girls’ futures and limits their choices. Adeniyi-Fashola praised TCF’s efforts and urged continued efforts against child marriage and violence.
Beneficiaries like Miss Eze Kelechi and Miss Fatima Aliyu expressed gratitude for the program, which empowered them with knowledge and confidence. They plan to share their newfound understanding with others in their communities.
