Post: Tinubu’s Initiative to Enhance Police Force Through Education Gains Momentum

Abuja: The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to reposition the Nigeria Police Force by enhancing education and training institutions. This announcement came during a courtesy visit by Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tunji Disu, and senior police officers to Dr. Alausa’s office.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the discussions centered on establishing a southern campus of the Police Academy in Erije, Abeokuta, Ogun. This initiative aligns with the President’s agenda to advance professionalism and security delivery. Dr. Alausa emphasized that this meeting is part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to enable the police to fulfill its mandate and enhance national security.

The proposed campus is expected to welcome its first cohort of students between September and November 2026, contingent upon expedited resource verification by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Dr. Alausa directed the NUC to accelerate this process to ensure the academ
ic schedule is maintained.

Furthermore, plans are underway to transform over 42 police colleges across the country into monotechnics. This transformation aims to fortify technical and professional training within the Force, facilitated by a presidential waiver to smooth the transition. Deliberations also included the accreditation of five to six monotechnics to offer courses relevant to enhancing police operational capacity.

Three committees have been established to oversee the implementation of these initiatives. The Resource Verification Committee is chaired by the NUC Executive Secretary. Another committee focusing on capacity improvement in police colleges is led by a Deputy Inspector-General of Police in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). The third committee, on infrastructure and physical development for the southern campus, is chaired by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, working alongside senior police officers.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba
Ahmed, expressed support for the initiative and pledged the ministry’s commitment to its successful implementation. During the visit, Inspector-General Disu highlighted the importance of education in addressing challenges across various sectors, including policing.
