Post: Usman-Led Interim Leadership Takes Charge of Labour Party Secretariat, Commits to Reforms

Abuja: The Interim National Chairman of Labour Party, Sen. Nenadi Usman, along with her team, officially assumed control of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. Usman addressed newsmen, announcing that this action followed the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the secretariat had previously been under the leadership of the former National Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure, and his team. A Federal High Court, led by Justice Peter Lifu, had earlier removed Abure as the party’s national chairman, upholding the Supreme Court’s decision that declared Usman the legitimate leader of the opposition party.

Usman expressed the party’s anticipation of a smooth transition following the court’s judgment, acknowledging that the process took longer than expected. She expressed contentment with the party’s current stability. As a former minister of finance, Usman assured that the leadership would act appropriately and timely to build a robust party structure that meets Nigerians’ expectations.

She commended the Deputy Governor of Abia, who chairs the National Steering Committee on Party Membership Revalidation and E-registration, for his efforts in strengthening the party’s membership database. Usman noted the committee’s extensive work since its inauguration in December 2025 and its regular updates to party leadership.

Usman extended gratitude to supporters and encouraged them, reassuring them of the party’s commitment to not letting them down. She stated that the news conference was part of efforts to rebuild internal structures and prepare for future political engagements.

Deputy Governor of Abia, Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, also spoke, emphasizing his committee’s dedication to unity, internal rebuilding, and participation in upcoming elections across Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Emetu highlighted Abia’s developments under Labour Party as evidence of effective democratic governance focused on the populace.

Addressing the ongoing membership revalidation and registration drive, Emetu described Labour Party as dedicated to restoring lost opportunities and prosperity for Nigerians. He affirmed that the Supreme Court’s verdict on the party’s leadership crisis was conclusive, dismissing any potential successful appeals by Abure’s faction.

Emetu refuted rumors that Labour Party would support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, asserting that the party would back its candidates instead. He confirmed that Labour Party intends to field candidates in the next presidential election, while remaining open to new aspirants.
