Accra:Kwara Alhaji Raheem Adedoyin, representing Africa on the Executive Board of the International Press Institute, has urged the Nigerian media to lead efforts in promoting good governance in the country. He emphasized this during his virtual address at the inauguration of the Kwara chapter of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Adedoyin highlighted the media’s critical role in strengthening democracy and ensuring public officials’ accountability. He noted that the Nigerian Constitution assigns the media a significant responsibility in promoting accountability, as outlined in Chapter 2 Section 22, which underscores journalism’s importance to a thriving democracy.
Adedoyin pointed out the challenges for Nigerian journalists in fostering good governance through balanced and responsible reporting. He stressed that journalists have a duty to investigate and expose any misconduct by public officials, balancing this with acknowledging government achievements where applicable.
He further stated that while journalism should expose state failures, it should not be seen as an adversarial stance against the government. Instead, objectivity, fairness, and professionalism are crucial in reporting. A free and responsible press is essential for sustaining democracy and strengthening public trust in governance.
Adedoyin also underscored the importance of communication in governance, describing it as essential for aligning government policies with public needs and expectations. Effective communication serves as a bridge between public authority and the public good.
Prof. Rasaq Adisa, Chairman of ACSPN in Kwara, praised Adedoyin’s presentation as a significant contribution to discussions on journalism and governance. Adisa announced plans to organize a workshop to further explore the issues raised and develop recommendations for improving media practices and governance.
